Arriving in western Uganda at night, roads are quiet, the air cooler than in the capital, and the surrounding hills seem to appear gradually as the headlights trace their curves. On this trip through the region, my destination was Fort Portal, a town often referred to as Uganda’s tourism capital and one of the most scenic gateways to the country’s western landscapes.
Fort Portal sits in the shadow of the Rwenzori Mountains, surrounded by tea plantations, crater lakes, and rolling green hills. It’s a place that feels calm and unhurried, the kind of town travelers often pass through on their way to national parks, but one that rewards those who take the time to stay awhile.
A Quiet Morning at Kalitusi Nature Resort
For the first night, I stayed at Kalitusi Nature Resort, a small retreat tucked into the greenery just outside town. The property feels more like a garden than a hotel, with winding paths and flowering plants.
Morning arrives slowly here and walking through the grounds before setting off for the day became its own quiet ritual.
Driving Through Fort Portal
Before leaving town, we passed by the historic Tooro Royal Palace, the home of the Tooro Kingdom’s monarch. The palace sits on a hill overlooking the town, a reminder that Fort Portal is not only a tourism hub but also a place with deep cultural roots.
From there, the road stretched south toward Kasese, with the landscape opening into broad valleys and endless green fields. Western Uganda is often described as one of the most beautiful parts of the country, and the drive alone makes that clear with tea plantations, crater lakes, and distant mountain silhouettes appearing along the way.
Near the Savannas of Queen Elizabeth National Park
By evening we were approaching Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda’s most famous wildlife destinations. Even before entering the park itself, the landscape begins to change. Forests give way to open savannah, and the horizon stretches wide in every direction.
That night we stayed at Dave the Cave Eco Lodge, a uniquely designed lodge surrounded by crater lakes and forested hills. The property blends into the natural landscape, offering a quiet and immersive way to experience the region’s remarkable scenery.
Why Fort Portal Is the Perfect Base for Western Uganda
For travelers planning a trip through western Uganda, Fort Portal is one of the best starting points. From here it’s easy to explore crater lakes, the Rwenzori Mountains, tea plantations, and wildlife destinations like Queen Elizabeth National Park.
It’s a region defined by lush landscapes, quiet towns, and the feeling that nature is never far away.
