@Leightons_3rdwardhtx — a proud black-owned restaurant in the heart of Houston’s historic Third Ward. Having spent the better part of my very many college years in this neighborhood, I’ve witnessed its remarkable evolution from a community on the brink of gentrification to a thriving hub of modern black culture.

Leighton’s is a testament to the culture, and spirit of Third Ward. The oxtail ramen bowl is “thee” dish to order. The Cajun rice bowl with lamb, along with the seafood ramen bowl and wings, are simply phenomenal. The restaurant has limited seating so plan an early visit or order your meal to-go. It’s refreshing to find a #Blackowned restaurant that prioritizes exceptional food without the fuss of reservation fees and ridiculously high prices for small servings. At Leighton’s, every bite tells a story of flavor, culture, and community.

The very first time I tried boba, I’ll admit, I wasn’t quite prepared for the slimy surprise and I sneakily spat it into a napkin. Slimy foods weren’t exactly my cup of tea, or in this case, bubble tea.

But life has a funny way of teaching us lessons, and one of those lessons was not to dismiss something outright just because it didn’t immediately win me over. Sometimes, it takes a little patience and an open mind to truly appreciate the finer things in life.

Fast forward a few years, and there I was, standing outside @fengchamidtown, a charming little bubble tea haven that had sprung up right across from my once-favorite midtown bubble tea spot.

At first glance, Feng Cha may look like just another bubble tea joint, but a closer look reveals a meticulously curated selection of artisanal teas, drinks, and desserts. It’s a sweet spot for a meet-up or a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown traffic, as you watch the world go by.

The ambiance at Feng Cha is meant to evoke a sense of balance and a calming energy flow, drawing inspiration from Feng Shui principles. The execution although not perfect, is still the most beautifully designed tea house I’ve encountered where the owner’s effort is evident.

And let’s not forget the star of the show — the bubble tea. I couldn’t resist trying their most popular concoction, the Crème Brûlée dirty boba. Each sip felt like I was indulging in a drinkable dessert, complete with layers of foam, sweet milk, and brown sugar. That was one of the few times I felt guilty about indulging but did not regret it.

I also sampled a simple matcha foam tea, which was undeniably delightful, but the dirty boba had already captured my heart. Feng Cha is the kind of tea house that invites you back to explore its diverse menu one delicious sip at a time.
