Escape Houston for a Day with Ferry Views and Gulf Breezes from Galveston to Bolivar

If you’re seeking a brief escape from Houston’s frenzied pace and city traffic, a short drive out to the Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry offers a serene, refreshing breather. This free ferry ride transports passengers between the bustling island of Galveston and the peaceful Bolivar Peninsula, delivering panoramic views of the Gulf in just 30 minutes.

Boarding the ferry is effortless—simply drive your car onto the vessel and settle in for the ride. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, park your car, head up to the top deck, and embrace the open air as you sail across. Alternatively, if you feel like lingering, remain on the ferry for the return trip once it reaches the other side. It’s a simple way to slow down and reconnect with nature.

The ferry terminals are easily accessible:

  • Galveston Ferry: 1000 Ferry Road, Galveston, TX 77550
  • Port Bolivar Ferry: 123 SH 87, Port Bolivar, TX 77650

As we drove on and the ferry began its journey, we made our way to the top deck to see the views of the Gulf. The wind, crisp and salty, swept through our hair, As seagulls swooped and called, the boat gently rocked. The ride felt like an invitation to unwind, if only for a brief moment.

Along the crossing, the views shift effortlessly between nature and history. You might spot dolphins gliding through the water or pelicans diving gracefully, while Pelican Island beckons with its historical Navy presence. If you’re lucky, you’ll see a navy destroyer and even a submarine docked in the distance. There’s also the iconic Bolivar Lighthouse and Fort Travis. And, of course, there’s always the chance to spot a variety of vessels, from towering freighters to local fishing boats and sailboats gliding past the horizon.

Once you dock on the Bolivar Peninsula, a short 15-minute drive will lead you to one of the peninsula’s quieter beaches, where you can lay out a blanket and enjoy a leisurely picnic, basking in the tranquility of the coast.

From the Port Bolivar Ferry landing, you can take State Highway 87 (SH 87) and follow it along the peninsula. You’ll find a variety of beaches just a short drive away, with several access points along the way.

A popular beach spot on Bolivar is Rollover Pass, which offers easy access to the water and great views. You can find it at this address:

  • Rollover Pass
2502 Rollover Pass Rd, Crystal Beach, TX 77650

It’s these simple, yet unforgettable moments that remind us of the joys of a quick getaway. Sometimes, the best trips don’t require grand plans, just a bit of time and the willingness to slow down and take it all in.
